A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed three people, including Faisal Al Islam, Managing Director (MD) of Shahabuddin Medical College Hospital, on five-day remand each in a case lodged over coronavirus (Covid-19) test scam and other forgeries.

The other two accused are hospital’s assistant director Dr Mohammad Abul Hasnat and inventory officer (store keeper) Shahzir Kabir Sadi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Asheq Imam passed the remand order as police produced the trio before the court and pleaded to place them on seven-day remand.

Lawyers of the accused submitted separate pleas for their bail. But Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashek Imam rejected their bail pleas after the court hearing.

Sub-Inspector Md Mashiur Rahman of Gulshan Police Station produced them before the court.
Earlier on July 19, a mobile court of RAB raided the hospital and found many anomalies there, including conducting illegal Covid-19 tests with unapproved kits, admitting and giving fake treatments to corona negative persons, by showing them corona positive through fake tests. Moreover, they were running the hospital with an expired licence.

The mobile court also seized unauthorized drugs from the hospital's pharmacy and fined them Tk two lakh. The license of the hospital was not renewed after June 2019.

Shahabuddin Medical College Hospital Managing Director MD Faisal Al Islam had claimed that he was infected with Covid-19 while he was arrested on Monday. However, later he was tested coronavirus negative.

According to Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) sources, Faisal probably made the false claim to avoid arrest.
On Sunday, RAB sealed off Shahabuddin Medical College Hospital in city’s Gulshan area following series of irregularities including running unauthorized Covid-19 tests.

RAB handed over Faisal on Tuesday noon, while the two others on Sunday night, to Gulshan Police Station.
