The government is going to construct a modern sewage treatment plant on the bank of Turag River on 20 hectares of land to ensure healthy sewerage system for dwellers of Uttara suburb. In this regard, the local government and rural development and cooperatives ministry has started acquiring land to establish a modern sewage treatment plant at Uttara, with an aim to ensure healthy, environment-friendly and stable sanitation in the locality.

Concerned officials said the Tk 1400 crore project is scheduled to end by June 2021. The government move comes as a part of its plan to bring the entire city under sewerage treatment coverage by 2025. Currently, less than 20 percent of the city is under the coverage, the officials added. By turns, sources said, sewerage treatment plants would be set up in Pagla, Dasherkandi, Uttara, Mirpur and Rayerbazar areas of the capital.

There is also a plan to construct another 11 new sewage treatment plants along with pipelines and other structures and develop Pagla Sewerage Treatment Plant. On November 12, 2015, project evaluation committee (PEC) of the planning commission held a meeting on the project. After getting recommendations, a development project proposal (DPP) has been prepared.

The project is now waiting for the approval of the executive committee of the national economic council (ECNEC) next meeting, a senior official of the planning commission said. Already a ‘sewage master plan’ under Dhaka’s water supply and sanitation project with the assistance of World Bank has been formulated to establish planned and healthy sewerage system in the capital.

Dhaka WASA has prepared a sewerage master plan for the city with the World Bank financing which recommended establishing a total of 11 sewage treatment plants in and around Dhaka city in two phases.
