A spell of moderate rain for only two hours on Tuesday afternoon caused severe waterlogging in many areas of the city. Several vehicles broke down, pedestrians had to wade through knee-high water, and traffic almost came to a halt as major city roads went under water.
We the city people have to suffer a lot due to waterlogging during the rainy season every year but the authorities concerned appear indifferent to ending the nagging problem.
Either the two city corporations or Dhaka WASA cannot assure us that they will give us relief from the waterlogging crisis in the upcoming monsoon.
Many areas in the capital get waterlogged due to the torrential rains with the onset of monsoon throwing the normal life out of gear every year. Triggered by active monsoon, Dhaka city sees heavy rain which lead to severe traffic snarl causing immense sufferings for the commuters. This chaotic scene is common in the city during the monsoon after hours of rain.

People residing in different areas in the city will have to face serious problem if heavy downpour inundates key roads of the city during the upcoming monsoon. Many parts of the city, including Dhanmondi, Rokeya Sarani, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Senpara Parbata, Merul Badda, Gulshan, Bijoy Sarani, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Arambagh, Motijheel, Sukrabad, Kalabagan, Gulistan, Manik Mia Avenue and Old Dhaka are inundated by rainwater every year.
Even the premises of Bangladesh Secretariat, the administrative hub of the country, go under knee-deep water. Besides, similar picture is seen on the lanes and by-lanes in the capital.
People, mainly office-goers and students, who go out of home for various works, are found themselves in trouble due to waterlogging and traffic jam. The two city corporations will have to take immediate measures to free the capital from waterlogging.
The maintenance work of Dhaka’s drainage system and canals has already been handed over to the Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation to eliminate waterlogging in the capital. Besides, the canals and water bodies under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, RAJUK and Water Development Board will also be handed over to the two city corporations.
The two Dhaka city mayors must play their role in drainage management and renovation works to ensure smooth water flow of the canals. We hope all necessary measures will be taken to rid the city of waterlogging problem.
