Severe heatwave sweeps through Chuadanga

A severe heatwave has been schorching Chuadanga for last several days. The temperature in Chuadanga was recorded 41.3 degrees Celsius at 3:00 pm on Friday.

The temperatures on Thursday, Wednesday and Tuesday were 40.4, 40.7 and 40.6 degrees Celsius respectively. Common people of the bordering district have been suffering due to extreme hot weather for last few days. Many people were hospitalized with hot-related illness. Moreover, the animals and birds were suffering as well. The local administration in Chuadanga has issued a heat alert for the district as temperatures have continued to surge over 40 degrees Celsius for the four consecutive days. People were also asked to not to come out of their houses without necessity.

The excessive heat of the sun is making life difficult for the people in the district. The day laborers, farmers, rickshaw pullers, van pullers and other workers had to suffer due to the heatwave. They got tired very soon when they went to work.

Officer-in-Charge of Meteorological Department in Chuadanga, Jaminur Rahman, said, “The heatwave may persist for few more days. There is no forecast of rain in the immediate future. There is no possibility of getting rid of the heatwave unless any rainfall. The highest temperature of the district was recorded 42.8 degrees Celsius last year. This year, the highest temperature may exceed 43 degrees Celsius.” Johurul Haque, resident of Uthuli village of Chuadanga, said, “It has been very difficult for us to work at the field amid the scorching heat. Moreover, our croplands are being damaged due to dry weather.”

Sujan Ali, resident of Karpasdanga village of the district, said, “I had to come out of my home to go to office. It feels very hot. It is very tough to stay out of home due to the heatwave.”

Jakir Hossain, a teacher and resident of Uthuli village of the district, said, “I feel thirsty even after drinking a plenty of water. Rain is very essential to get rid of the ongoing heatwave. The temperature is very high.”

Dr Kisinzar Chakma, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chuadanga, said, “With the suggestions of the district meteorological office and health department, the district administration on Thursday issued a heat alert in Chuadanga for 72 hours due to excessive heat and the rising temperature.  Campaign through loudspeakers has been continued in four Upazilas of the district to warn people about the heatwave.”
