Severe heat, erratic load shedding, and low voltage, during the last couple of days have been causing untold sufferings to people in Sylhet district.

It is also hampering smooth irrigation and production in the industrial sector in the area.

According to sources, the village people are the worst sufferer. The city dwellers are experiencing several hours load-shedding while villagers enduring frequent load-shedding.

Extreme heat and lack of rain also put extra strain of the people of the district.

Meanwhile, daily load shedding of five to six hours is disrupting production in Sylhet's industries. Due to load shedding, the cost of buying diesel and running generators is increasing. Production in small and medium industries has halved, traders said.

They are facing losses due to an increase in the cost of production. Not only businessmen are facing losses, but students and the general public of all classes are also facing losses.

Eman Ahmad, a cloth trader in Sylhet, said that load shedding takes place at least five times a day. In load shedding, there is no electricity for one and a half to two hours. When there is no electricity, buyers do not come to the market. If this continues for a few more days, we will have to stop the business and go home.

Tamim Hossain, a resident of the Sylhet city said that his children cannot study at night for the load shedding.

Gous Ali, a guardian of an HSC examinee said that students have become accustomed to reading in electric light. Due to sever load-shedding, HSC preparations are being hampered as students must study in candle light.

Meanwhile, surgical, labor and other operations are being hampered at hospitals in the area due to frequent power cuts.

Talking to Bangladesh Post, an official of Power Development Board blamed frequent load shedding for low electricity production and lack of supply.

“The demand of power in Sylhet is about 550 MW, but they are getting only 350 MW during the peak hours. The demand for power supply increases due to heat wave but the supply is decreasing. As a result, people are facing huge load shedding which is causing sufferings.
