Seven held for robbery on Expressway

Detective Branch(DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested seven people on charges of committing robbery on the Dhaka Elevated Expressway while posing as member of elite Rapid Action Battalion(RAB).

DB Chief Harunor Rashid disclosed it while addressing at a press conference at DMP Media Center in the capital Dhaka.

He claimed that  the alleged robbers were arrested during a special drives in the different parts of the country.

The suspected robbers were primarily  identified as 35, Md Ferdous Waheed, 35, Md Alamin Duari, 42, Md Sabuj Mia Shyamal, 39, Md Saharul Islam Sagar, 23, Abu Yusuf, 41, Didar alias Didar Munshi, and Md Daud Hossain Molla, 39.

DB also sized  huge items which were used for robbery, which includes a car, RAB jackets, handcuffs, toy pistols, wireless sets, and mobile phones, DB teams also seized several sets of jewellery bought with the stolen money and Tk 23.9  lakh in cash from their possessions.

DB Chief Harunor Rashid said the robbery took place on Oct 10 around 3:30 pm on the tollway. The perpetrators posed as RAB officers during the incident.

An official of Mother Textile withdrew Tk 83.5 lakh from the firm's account at an Uttara branch of Al-Arafah Islami Bank.

He subsequently paid Tk 35 lakh to a business partner and set off for Banani with the rest of the cash in the company car.

The car was travelling along the elevated expressway from Kawla when a maroon-coloured vehicle overtook and blocked its path near Khilkhet.

Five or six men wearing black jackets subsequently emerged from the car. They falsely identified themselves as RAB officers and accused the company officials of carrying illegal weapons, the DB boss described.

The robbers subsequently blindfolded and handcuffed Animesh Chandra Saha, along with his associate, Shahjahan Mia, and the driver, Abul Bashar. They then drove around with the victims for sometime before releasing them on the 300 Feet Road.

DB analysed CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspects, who were implicated in robbery cases in 15 districts. They had previously been arrested. However  they were released on bail and again started robbery.
