A technical seminar titled "Safeguarding Marine Ecosystems: Ballast Water Management" was held in Chattogram, focusing on sustainable shipping practices and environmental compliance. Organised by the Nautical Institute Chattogram Branch, the event took place on Tuesday evening at the Karnaphuli Ballroom, Hotel Agrabad.
The seminar addressed the technical dimensions of ballast water management, highlighting strategies and technologies to prevent ecological damage caused by harmful marine organisms and pathogens often transported through ballast water discharged from ships. It aimed to foster collaboration, awareness, and technical capacity among shipowners, regulators, and maritime professionals, contributing to the development of a greener and more sustainable shipping industry in Bangladesh.
The event was moderated by Captain Moin Uddin, General Secretary of the Nautical Institute Chattogram Branch. The session began with a welcome address and organisational overview delivered by Chairman M.A. Malek, followed by a short video presentation on marine environmental protection.
Captain Md. Abu Sufian of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) delivered a keynote speech on the significance of the Ballast Water Management Plan (BWMP), regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and crew training to safeguard marine biodiversity.
Commodore Mahmudul Malek, Managing Director of BSC, highlighted the importance of building environmentally friendly, technologically advanced vessels and expanding BSC’s operations. He emphasised the role of modern communication systems, daily monitoring, and innovative initiatives in propelling BSC towards global excellence.
Captain Shahidul Islam from Solent Maritime University, UK, shared insights on maritime education, professional development, and preparing seafarers for both sea and shore-based careers.
The seminar featured an interactive Q&A session and a presentation titled “Maritime Forecast 2050.”
Participants included representatives from BSC, Chattogram Port Authority, Mercantile Marine Department, Marine Academy, and other maritime institutions.
