Sellers fined for charging high commodity prices in Noakhali

As part of market monitoring, commodity price control and market supervision during the current Ramadan, the district branch and mobile court of the National Consumer Protection Department have conducted separate operations in different places of Begumganj upazila of Noakhali. 

At that time, a trader was fined Tk 20,000 for selling watermelon at a price higher than the fixed price and a trader was fined Tk 50,000 for selling edible oil (soybean oil) at a price higher than the price fixed by the government.

The drive was conducted on Monday afternoon, the Assistant Director of the National Consumer Protection Department, Noakhali. Kausar Mia and Begumganj Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Mobile Court Executive Magistrate Mohammad Kamrul Hossain Chowdhury. Begumganj Model Police Station assisted in the operation.

According to mobile court sources, the National Consumer Protection Department raided the Chaumuhani Bank Road area at noon to keep the prices of essential commodities stable during Ramadan. During the raid, the company was fined Tk 50,000 for selling soybean oil at a wholesale price of Tk 151 instead of the wholesale price of Tk 136 per liter.

Meanwhile, mobile courts have been conducting raids in different parts of the upazila since morning as part of Ramadan market surveillance. During the operation, the prices of goods were monitored at various business establishments in Chaumuhani Bazar at noon. Meanwhile, a raid was carried out on watermelon trader Shah Alam's shop in Chaumuhani Hawkers Market area and a fine of Tk 20,000 was imposed for selling any kind of purchase memo and two watermelons for Tk 600.

Noakhali Assistant Director of the Department of Consumer Protection has confirmed the fines. Kausar Mia and Begumganj Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Kamrul Hossain Chowdhury. The officials also said that the operation will continue to control the market.
