Security tightened for Eid

Police will keep the whole country under security blanket during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. Like every year, police will set up check posts at all important areas and structurers in and around the capital city. Sources with law enforcing agencies said this year they are paying special attention to two new aspects: social media and militancy. Police will remain on high alert, monitoring these two new issues for ensuring safer Eid for the countrymen.

Sources said like every year, police will arrange special security arrangement for three days: the day before the Eid, on Eid day and the day after Eid. Police Headquarters, Dhaka Metropolitan Police and other operational units of police recently held several meetings to finalise their security plan. Dhaka Metropolitan Police has already set up dozens of check posts at different points of the capital to check suspicious persons and prevent untoward incidents.

While visiting Gulshan Shooting Complex and Hatirjheel area of the capital on Thursday, this correspondent found police personnel  checking passengers, their bags at the check posts. They were even checking  rickshaw passengers; their bags, mobile phones and luggage .  Additional forces have been deployed at Ramna, Gulshan, Uttara, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Adabor, Mirpur, Baridhara and old part of Dhaka.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, Assistant Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Md Sohel Rana said, “Most of the city dwellers leave the capital to celebrate Eid with their near and dear ones, vacating a huge number of houses back in Dhaka for several days. We shall enhance our security for this period of time at all the thanas in Dhaka.”

“Police patrol will be also increased at every areas and roads of the country,” he said, adding police is on alert so that criminal cannot carry out any crimes during these holydays. Meanwhile, in a bid to intensify security system at every police stations, DMP has set up CCTV cameras at numerous city corners, and monitors of the cameras have been set up at the rooms of every duty officers of the police stations.

Visitors are being allowed to enter inside the premises of police stations only after checking their bodies and getting their identities. While visiting Ramna Police Stations, it was found that several constables are documenting the names of visitors and the reasons of their visits to the police station, before allowing them inside the station.

In some cases, their luggage are also being checked. AIG Sohel Rana said, “Normally all-out security arrangements have been taken at every police stations. CCTV cameras have been installed at the rooms of the each duty officers and other important areas of the police stations.” Inspector General of Bangladesh police Dr Javed Patwary held series of meetings with his subordinates centring security measures during Eid holidays.

He instructed the officials to enhance gathering intelligence information and take awareness building programmes so that militants cannot carry out any misdeed during the Eid.” He also asked to take special measures to resist extortionists, thefts, robberies, hijack and other crimes. He also ordered to monitor the social media so that no one can publish any post hampering religious harmony in the country.
