Second highest Covid cases in a day

Infection rate rises to 32.40

Bangladesh registered 18 more deaths in 24 hours from Covid-19 till 8am Tuesday. The total number of deaths has reached to 28,256 with the latest figure.

Meanwhile, the country recorded 16,033 new infections, the second highest infections in a day, taking the total number of people infected to 1,715,997, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Tuesday.

The highest infections recorded were 16,230 cases in July last year.

The current positivity rate is 32.40 percent and the overall positivity rate stands at 14.05 percent.

In addition, the death rate now stands at 1.65 percent in the country, added the release.

Among the deceased, eight were reported in the Dhaka division, six in Chattogram, and one each in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions. 

A total of 49,492 samples were tested across the country till 8am Tuesday. 

Some 1,095 Covid-19 patients have recovered during this period. A total of 1,558,954 people recovered from the virus so far and the recovery rate stands at 90.85 percent.

As of Tuesday, 5,624,998, people died of Covid-19 across the world and 356,076,408 have been infected so far, according to Worldometer.

The overall number of Covid cases has surpassed 354 million amid the rise in Omicron infections across the globe.

According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 354,310,228 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,603,714 Tuesday morning.

The US has recorded 71,645,863 cases so far and 868,420 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.

India's Covid-19 tally rose to 39,543,328 Monday, as 306,064 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the federal health ministry's data.

Monday was the fifth consecutive day when over 300,000 new cases were registered in a day in the country in over eight months.

Besides, as many as 474 deaths were recorded since Saturday morning, taking the death toll to 489,896. 

Meanwhile, the country's Omicron tally reached 10,050 Monday. Most of the Omicron cases have been reported from the states of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Delhi.

Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since last January, registered 24,134,946 cases as of Tuesday, while its Covid death toll rose to 623,412.
