Seaweed fair inaugurated in Patuakhali

For the first time, a seaweed fair has been organized in Kuakata upazila of Patuakhali for the alternative employment of sea-going fishermen. Fisheries and Animal Resources Minister SM Rezaul Karim inaugurated the fair as the chief guest at Kuakata Tourist Motel premises on Friday at 11 am.

Director General of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute. Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Resources Dr Yahya Mahmud spoke as a special guest at the inauguration ceremony. Muhammad Yamin Chowdhury, Director General of Fisheries Department B Mahbubul Haque, Additional Secretary of Fisheries Department Tahiful Arif.

Kalapara Upazila Chairman SM Rakibul Ahsan, Women Vice Chairman Shahina Parveen Seema, Associate Researcher of EcoPhys-2 Project Sagarika Smriti, Professor of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology Dr Sajedul Haque, Professor Lokman etc.

The chief guest at the meeting said that the demand for seaweed as a seafood is increasing in today's world. If it is cultivated at sea in Kuakata, the fishermen here will benefit economically. Fishermen can benefit financially by cultivating seaweed during fishing ban.

Since 2013, the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute's Marine Fisheries and Technology Center has been successful in conducting research on seaweed to increase its spread in the country. They have already invented six species of seaweed. Which is a great achievement of Bangladesh in maritime economy.

Earlier, the Minister inaugurated the Seaweed Fair by flying balloons and pigeons and toured the fair stall. During this time guests are served a variety of dishes made with seaweed.
