A killer will remain on death row for the 2005 double-murder after the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected his plea that he is innocent.
The Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of Aminul Islam, who was convicted of killing Nazneed Akter, a physician of LabAid Hospital in Dhaka, and her housemaid 16 years ago.
The six-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, delivered the verdict after rejecting the convict’s jail appeal.
ABM Bayezid, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, moved for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Bishwajit Debnath represented the state. The lawyers said that after the rejection of the appeal by the apex court, the death sentence of Aminul remains upheld.
Aminul Islam used to live at the residence of his maternal uncle Asaruzzaman, husband of slain Dr Nazneed Akter, and was studying in Muhammadpur Central College.
Dr Nazneed Akter was hacked to death by her nephew after she returned to her residence in the capital on March 7 in 2005. Parul, the housemaid , witnessed the murder incident. For this reason, Aminul also killed Parul.
A case was filed with Dhanmondi police station in this connection. Police arrested the killer from Faridpur. Later, a speedy trial tribunal of Dhaka awarded death sentence to Aminul.
In 2013, the High Court upheld the death sentence. Aminul, however, appealed to the apex court challenging the HC’s verdict. The apex court upheld the High Court’s verdict, rejecting the arguments of Aminul.
