SC functions suspended for SCBA president’s death

All functions of the Appellate Division and High Court Division of the Supreme Court was suspended for Thursday (April 15) in honour of president of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Abdul Matin Khasru who died on Wednesday. 

Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain suspended the court’s functions. While presiding over a full bench of the Appellate Division for hearing and disposing of cases on Thursday morning, he said that all the proceedings of the Appellate Division and High Court Division of the Supreme Court will be suspended for the day to pay tributes to Abdul Matin Khasru.

“Being the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association is an honour. The country’s great leader Sher-E-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque was the president of the association. We (judges of the Supreme Court) will not sit (in the bench for dealing with cases) for today (Thursday),” the Chief Justice said.

Earlier in the day, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin requested the Chief Justice to suspend the judicial functions of the Supreme Court for the day to pay respect to Abdul Matin Khasru. Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, also requested the Chief Justice to do something for honouring the SCBA president as it is first that an SCBA president died before performing duty. 

Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru, also an Awami League MP from Cumilla-5 constituency, died of Covid-19 at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon. He was buried at his family graveyard at Mirpur village in Brahmanpara of Cumilla on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a Namaz-e-Janaza of Abdul Matin Khasru was held on Supreme Court premises at about 10:00 am on Thursday.  A number of lawyers, judges and Cabinet ministers joined the Namaz-e-Janaza there. Among them, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Law Minister Anisul Haque, LGRD Minister Tajul Islam, Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

Different organisations paid homage to Abdul Matin Khasru by placing wreaths at his coffin. Floral wreaths were also placed at the coffin on behalf of the President, Prime Minister, Speaker and Chief Justice.  

Abdul Matin Khasru was born at Mirpur village in Cumilla on February 12 in 1950. He was a presidium member of the ruling Awami League. He served as the law minister during the party’s 1996-2001 regime. He was elected MP during the 1991-1996, 1996-2001, 2008-2013 and 2014-2019 terms. He was elected chairman of the executive committee of the Bangladesh Bar Council in 2015. He was a freedom fighter and was the commander of Burichang in Cumilla during the Liberation War in 1971.
