Satyajit Ray’s ‘Pather Panchali’ in color

Legendary filmmaker of the subcontinent Satyajit Ray’s immortal work ‘Pather Panchali’ was released in 1955. Long before that time, it was common in the world to make color films. But to bring out the then reality of the subcontinent it was made in black and white. The black and white film is now recognized as one of the classics of world cinema.

Many people who have seen ‘Pather Panchali’ have thought that if the picture was colourful it would have been great! A team of researchers from the University of Maryland in the United States is trying to fulfil their desire. They have released a color video of 4K resolution of ‘Pather Panchali’.

Bangladeshi video editor Rakib Rana is working with a research team from the University of Maryland. They have used Artificial Intelligence or AI technology.

In the 3 minute video released by the research team, Apu, Durga, Sarbajaya and Harihar have appeared in colorful forms. Also seen are the famous train departure and the scene of Kashban.
