Illegal sand extraction at various points along the Sarta Canal in Raozan upazila has caused severe erosion, threatening hundreds of acres of cropland, homesteads, protective embankments, and vital roads.
During an on-site visit on Saturday, it was found that although one sand quarry in the Hossar Ghat area under Holdia Union has been leased legally, illegal sand extraction continues at two other spots. Locals allege that sand is being dredged around the clock using dredger machines.
Residents stated that due to this illegal sand extraction, canal-side houses and farmlands are collapsing into the water. So far, the homesteads of at least 150 families have been swallowed by the canal. Having lost their ancestral land, many are now living in rented houses under miserable conditions. Locals also claim that influential individuals have been carrying out this operation for a long time due to a lack of effective monitoring by the administration.
Mohammad Jasim Chowdhury, a resident of the affected area, said, "There used to be about an acre of farmland along the Sarta Canal that had been in my family for generations. The devouring canal has taken it all away. What little remains is no longer suitable for cultivation."
Locals hold reckless sand extraction responsible for the canal's erosion.
When contacted, Raozan Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Aungching Marma said, "We have received complaints regarding illegal sand extraction. The site will be inspected soon, and necessary legal action will be taken."
