Sand is being extracted by the influentials from the char areas of the river Padma in Bagha upazila without any tender or leasing.
According to sources, Bagha upazila administration published the tender notice for leasing the sand dunes on the river Padma at Luxminagar under Chalkrajapur Union of Bagha in March this year. But, despite the publishing of the tender notice, the upazila administration has no information on whose name the sand dunes were leased out.
It is learnt, local political leaders, mainly from BNP, were engaged in the extraction of sand from the river without any permission or without participating in any tender.
Shammi Akhter, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Bagha in this connection said, she has no information regarding the leasing of the sand dunes. She further mentioned that the sand dunes are leased by the district administration. She added, she did not get any papers about leasing two sand dunes of the upazila for the current year. She, however, assured to take steps in this connection soon.
