Salman, ex-IGP Mamun shown arrested in attempt to murder case

Salman F Rahman, adviser to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Inspector General of Police, were shown arrested on Wednesday in connection with an attempted murder case filed at Khilgaon Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifur Rahman issued the order after Investigation Officer (IO) Md Atiquzzaman, a sub-inspector at Khilgaon Police Station, presented them in court and submitted a petition requesting their formal arrest for questioning.

In his application, the IO noted that both individuals were named as accused in the First Information Report (FIR) and needed to be taken into custody for interrogation.

The case was initially filed on September 30 by transport worker Mohammad Sohel, who lodged the complaint against Sheikh Hasina, Salman F Rahman, Mamun, and 76 others with a Dhaka court. Following the complainant's statement, the court instructed the officer in charge of Khilgaon Police Station to register the matter as an FIR.

Other high-profile figures implicated in the case include Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former AL lawmaker Shamim Osman, former Minister for Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Saber Hossain Chowdhury, and former Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun Or Rashid.

According to case documents, Sohel participated in participated in a march organized by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in front of Khilgaon Pallima School around 5:30 p.m. on August 4. As the procession attempted to approach Khilgaon P Police Station, it was met with indiscriminate gunfire and sound grenades allegedly fired by Awami League affiliates and police. Sohel sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and forehead.

On October 7, Saber Chowdhury was also shown arrested in the same case, but he was granted bail the next day due to health concerns. Salman was apprehended from Sadarghat on A on August 13, while Mamun was in army custody following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. Mamun later expressed his intent to surrender after the case was filed against him, leading to his transfer into police custody on September 3.
