Safe water for all in Khulna by 2020

From next year, about 2 lakh people will get safe drinking water in 25 upazilas of greater Khulna. Work on several projects aimed at supplying potable water to these upazilas is progressing at a rapid pace. Work on these projects is due to end in June,2020. The Department of Public Health Engineering is implementing this project at a cost of Tk 45 crore 90 lakhs.

After being hit by a natural disaster called Aila on May 25, Satkhira's Shyamnagar, Ashashuni, Tala, Khulna's Koira, Paikgachha, Dakop, Batiaghata, Mongla, Rampal, Sharankhola, Morelganj upazilas lacks potable water. Other upazilas of Greater Khulna is in water crisis.

To overcome this crisis, Department of Public Health Engineering undertook potable water supply projects in Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat areas. Although the project taken on July 2017 is expected to be completed by June this year, but the time has been extended till June next year. Under the project, 664 deep tube wells, 5 shallow tube wells, 14 km pipeline, 125 PSF repair installations, 50 solar system pond sand filters and 5020 rainwater harvesting tanks are being installed. 84 percent of the project work has already been completed.

Deputy Assistant Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department S M Ismail Hossain said, “portable water is being provided in most areas till now, many projects have been implemented and more are ongoing. The projects will solve the current water crisis.”

“People are getting pure water in arsenic prone and deprived areas”, he added.

Executive Engineer of the Department of Public Health, Zahid Pervez, said arsenic risk reduction project has been undertaken in Paikgachha, Rupsa, Dumuria and Tarkhada upazilas of Khulna.
