Safe environment needed for Rohingya repatriation: Speaker

A delegation of Britain’s ‘Conservative Friends of Bangladesh’ paid a courtesy call on Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday at her office. The 22-member delegation was led by the Group’s Chairman, Anne Maine. During the meeting, they discussed about peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis, prevention of river pollution, protecting the environment, et al, said a press release issued today.

Dr Shirin said that the Rohingya crisis is a big issue for the world. Requesting the international community to take effective steps to solve the problem, she said that Myanmar had to create a peaceful environment for the safe repatriation of Rohingyas, added the release. She called on international organizations to visit the Rakhine State of Myanmar to understand the real situation of persecution on them and to pressurize Myanmar to stop it.

Anne Maine said that Britain has been with Bangladesh since the beginning of the Rohingya Crisis and Britain will continue providing support for the repatriation of the Rohingyas. Later, International Justice Mission’s (IJM) Regional President of South Asia Shaju Mathew paid a courtesy call on Dr Shirin at her office.

They discussed various issues including raising awareness about prevention of trafficking of human trafficking, particularly women and children. Emphasizing the importance of ensuring proper enforcement of law to prevent torture of women and children, the Speaker said that all those involved in law enforcement should upgrade their skills for the purpose.

During the meeting, she said that the Bangladesh government provides police support, trauma counseling and legal assistance and rehabilitation to women and children who have been trafficked. Shaju Mathew said the International Justice Mission is working in various countries to prevent women and children from being abused and to prevent human trafficking, in general. He expressed his willingness to continue working in Bangladesh for training and awareness building.
