People in rural areas of the country are not following social distancing protocol or wearing protective gear while outdoors. Most people in these areas are carrying on their daily activities and not taking any precaution to prevent the spread of the virus.

Gatherings are taking place and people are going out and likely spreading the disease by refusing to wear masks or gloves. However, it should be noted that majority of the rural population is unaware on the transmission of the virus or the dire situation due to the pandemic.

The government announced a 10-day shutdown which was later extended till April 14th. The shutdown might be further extended according to experts. Marketplaces in rural areas continue to be crowded and people are completely disregarding government directives.

The government is making regular announcement on loud speakers to the general public to maintain precaution in order to prevent the spread of the virus. While some are seemingly complying with the others, some are choosing to completely ignore the directives and carry on their usual activities.

These people are not only putting themselves at risk of contracting the virus, they are also risking the lives of their family members and neighbours and contributing to the virus becoming epidemic in the country. Many people believe that the virus will be unable to spread in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile experts are emphasizing the need for social distancing during these times in order to prevent the transmission of the virus. The lockdown must be strictly implemented in all districts. Both rural and urban populations must be urged to take necessary precautions when going out.

People must limit going outside of their homes to strictly essential business such as buying groceries and medicine. Fines and jail time should be given as penalty for those who risk the safety of others by going out unnecessarily.
