Rupganj Correspondent: A protest rally and demonstration were held at Gausia Market in Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj on Friday afternoon, organised by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, demanding legal recognition of the July Charter and the holding of national elections under the Proportional Representation (PR) system.

Speaking as the chief guest, Muhammad Hafizur Rahman, Central Majlis-e-Shura member and Narayanganj district secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami, said, “The lesson of the July uprising is the formation of a fascism-free Bangladesh. To build a democratic governance system, elections must be held under the PR system.”

The rally was presided over by Mahfuzul Islam Abdul Majid, Ameer of Rupganj (North). Special guests included Jamaat’s nominated MP candidate for Narayanganj-1 (Rupganj) Anwar Hossain Mollah, Narayanganj district working committee member Prof Mohammad Ali Khan, Advocate Israfil Hossain, Mawlana Faruk Ahmad, Mohammad Hanif Bhuiyan, Khairul Islam, and Anisur Rahman.

Hafizur Rahman added, “People no longer want to return to a fascist regime or witness authoritarian rule. The era of vote-rigging and fraudulent midnight elections must end. To do so, the July Charter must be legally enacted and serve as the foundation for the next national election.”

Other speakers emphasised that PR-based elections would prevent vote-buying, ballot fraud, and reduce the influence of black money in politics.
