Since August last year the amount of rumours floating around the country has increased substantially. People have been misled into believing various situations which never occurred or had a shred of truth to it. Recent reports in this daily suggests that there is a new wing of rumour mongers in the country who are trying to create confusion and are acting as anti-government propaganda. Meanwhile, the most recent rumour presents a string of confusing and superstitious scene which could only have been possible in the middle ages.

It is commendable that the government and authorities are working towards getting to the bottom of these rumours. Already a few of the perpetrators have been caught and as the investigation is still ongoing, more interesting facts are bound to surface soon. The criminal organisations that are creating these problems are bound to get caught soon. The prominence of rumours gained a countrywide spread last year with the student protests for road safety. Since then there have been countless rumours being spread across the nation. In answer to that the authorities too have started intelligence cells for cracking down on the people who spread rumours.

The spread of propaganda

 for hindering the advent of

development is quite unnerving

The latest rumour about human sacrifices being required to build the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is quite shocking. In this time and age, the spread of such superstitious gossip for hindering the advent of development is quite unnerving. Moreover, the people being swayed by such incidents are also uncalled for.

The authorities should consider creating mass awareness as that is how the rumours are spreading in the first place. The introduction of Digital Security Act 2018 was a massive positive side to sift out the truth from the false. It should be ensured that innocents are not victimised just because of talking with friends and family on the social media. The authorities concerned should properly investigate and get to the roots before arresting anyone.
