Ruma Guha Thakurta passes away at 84

Veteran actress Ruma Guha Thakurta passed away on Monday morning at her Ballygunge Place, Kolkata residence at the age of 84. Only a few days ago the popular actress returned to Kolkata. She had gone to see her son Amit Kumar and spent almost 3 months there. Ruma Guha Thakurta was suffering from age related illness over the past few years. Born in Kolkata in 1934, the veteran actress-singer tied the knot with legendary Kishore Kumar in 1951. However, after 6 years they got divorced. Then in 1960 she married Arup Guha Thakurta.

Apart from playing a wide range of characters in a number of hit Bengali films, she was a popular playback singer as well. Her flawless acting in ‘Antony Firingi’, ‘Ganga Obhijaan’, ‘Palatak’, 'Aashite Aasio Na', 'Balika Bodhu' is still remembered by Bengali audience. She acted in Satyajit Ray's 'Abhijaan' and 'Ganoshotru' as well.

Being a student of Debabrata Biswas, Ruma Guha Thakurta will also be remembered for her contribution to Bengali music.
