The RUCSU constitution mandates holding student union elections annually. However, elections have been postponed over the years due to various reasons, mainly related to the country’s political situation. The last RUCSU election was held in the academic year 1989–90.

In that election, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) candidate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed was elected as Vice-President (VP) and JSD Chhatra League candidate Ruhul Kuddus Babu was elected as General Secretary (GS).
