A Rajshahi Court on Thursday issued an order restraining a teacher of Rajshahi University (RU) to join the Law and Land Administration Department of the university as chairman.

Rajshahi Sadar Senior Assistant Judge Court issued the order following a petition filed by Md Shahriar Pervez, an assistant professor of the department, challenging the legality of appointing another department’s teacher at the department as chairman. Next hearing over the issue will be held on June 27.As per the rules prescribed in the university ordinance, one of the senior teachers of a department, not below the rank of assistant professor, would be appointed as the chairman of that department, said Prof Md Shahriar Pervez.

But, violating the university ordinance, the university registrar Prof MA Bari issued an office order on Wednesday stating that associate professor Md Rafiqul Islam had been appointed to the post of chairman of for three years. He on Thursday morning joined at the department in spite of the court stay order.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, Md Rafiqul Islam said that he submitted his joining letter to the university registrar in the morning and then the registrar accepted it.
