RU students on hunger strike demanding answer script re-evaluation

The 2nd year students of Rajshahi University (RU) Urdu department are on hunger strike until death demanding revaluation of results.

They are holding this program in front of the administration building of the University from 10:30 am on Sunday (05 December) and have been continuing their strike until writing this report.

The students said that they will continue their hunger strike until the result correction is not resolved.

They alleged that they have been assured more than ten times to correct the results and publish fair results. The university administration is wasting time without solving the problem. Apart from this, they also demanded punishment of those teachers, who are involved in those result disaster.

The students were showing placards placing their demands during the strike.

Shariful Islam, an Urdu department student of the 2019-20 academic year who is on the hunger strike told that they have been assured to solve the problems by the university administration for more than 10 times. 

The university authority gave us time till the end of November but haven’t taken any step. We want this problem solved. Besides, we have been victimized to mental torture by some teachers in the department. We want to get rid of these,” said Shariful.

Bayezid Hossain, another student from the hunger strike said, “The authority is wasting time assuring us deceitfully. Now we won’t accept any assurances. We will continue our hunger strike till the results are falsified. I may die in this.”

Urdu department Chairman Professor Ataur Rahman said, “We have held several meetings with the teachers of the department regarding the result disaster. The Admission Committee has submitted its report. The committee has decided to keep the previous result.”

 Rajshahi University pro-vice-chancellor Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam told that they have held a meeting with the teachers of the department to resolve the issue. I instructed them to take the students back to the classroom. Besides, a committee will be formed to investigate this incident of result disaster. Contextually, there are 35 regular and 3 irregular students in the academic year 2019-20 of the department. 

All of them passed the exam in the first semester. The second-semester examination was held in April. Then their results were published on August 25. As a result, of 38 candidates, 30 results were published. 

The results of 6 regular and two irregular students were not published and 6 students failed in one course each.

On that day, agitating students locked the department office and chairman's room and announced the closure of the department. Later they opened the lock with the assurance of the student adviser.
