UNB, Rajshahi: A senior teacher of Rajshahi University (RU) was killed and his colleague critically injured as a vehicle rammed into their motorbike in Paba upazila of Rajshahi district on Friday morning.
Police identified the deceased as Shiv Shankar Roy, 58, a professor of Marketing Department and the injured as Md Asaduzzaman, another professor at the department of Philosophy. He is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-charge of Paba Police Station Monirul Islam said the accident occurred around 7am near the Ansar Camp on the Naogaon-Rajshahi highway in Nowhata area when a vehicle collided with a motorcycle and fled the scene, leaving them critically injured.
Locals rescued the two and took them to the hospital but Prof Shankar succumbed to his injuries before arrival. “Asaduzzaman is still unconscious,” he said.
RU assistant proctor Gias Uddin said the teachers were heading towards Nowhata for fishing riding Asaduzzaman’s motorcycle. Pillion passenger Shankar suffered severe head injuries in the collision and is believed to have died instantly.
His body has been kept at Rajshahi Medical College morgue while the university administration is preparing to send it to his native home in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna district.
Colleagues, students and university authorities have expressed deep sorrow at the tragic death of the teacher.
