A Rajshahi University female student was allegedly assaulted physically on early Wednesday.

The victim is a first year student of the university. She is now undergoing treatment at One-Stop Crisis Centre of Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital (RMCH).

Following this, the victim student also filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Act with Matihar Police Station against the accused Shaymol Banik, 45, son of Debdas Banik at Gopalgonj district

According to the case statement, she alleged that she used to teach the daughters of RU Sanskrit Department Professor Bithika Banik. Like the other days, she went for tuition on Tuesday evening but could not manage to return her residential hall at night due to the heavy rain, and the insistence of Professor Bithika Banik to stay for the night.

Professor Bithika Banik who is also the provost of RU Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Hall, left her house, situated outside of RU campus, for the hall where a student attempted to commit suicide at 1:30 am, leaving her two daughters, the female student, and his younger brother in the house at midnight.

Around 02:30 am, she felt someone was touching her sensitive parts of the body and got aroused from sleep. Opening her eyes, she found that Bithika Banik’s brother Shyamol Banik touched her body who later embraced her forcibly and started molesting her, the statement read.

However, after the incident, Shymol Banik left the room after the female student shouted, and she awoke the whole night.

Later she discussed the matter with the university proctor Professor Lutfor Rahman and talked with her father who suggested her to complain by using 999.

In response to a query, Professor Bithika Banik told The Bangladesh Post that she left the hall at 1:30 am on Tuesday night as an untoward situation had been created in the hall. ‘I actually do not know what happened last night’, she said adding that her brother, who is used to live the life of a monk, could not commit such heinous act.

Officer-in-charge of Matihar Police Station Hafizur Rahman told The Bangladesh Post that they arrested Shyamol Banik and sent him to jail showing arrest in the case after producing him before the Rajshahi court.
