The advanced Bail granted to Dr Raju Ahmed, Physician of Rajshahi University Medical Centre has been cancelled and he has been ordered to be sent to Jail hajat by Emdadul Haque Ripon, Judge of Women and Children Tribunal-1 in Rajshahi on Sunday.

According to Advocate Dil Setara Chuni, Head of Bangladesh National Women's Lawyers' Asociation, Rajshahi division, after filing the case against Dr Raju Ahmed, he was granted bail from the High Court on condition of appearing at the lower court within the next four weeks.

BNWLA Tribunal-1 appeared in favour of the plaintiff seeking cancellation of the bail of Dr Raju Ahmed and after hearing, the Court cancelled his bail and ordered him to send to jail hajat. Jahid Hossain, President of Rajshahi Advocate Bar Association appeared for Dr Raju Ahmed.

It is learnt, on October 30, 2023, Assistant Professor Sabina Yeasmin of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of RU filed a case of sexual harassment against Dr Raju Ahmed.

In the statement of the case Sabina Yesmin said, she went with her adolescent daughter to the Private Chamber of Dr Raju Ahmed for the treatment of teeth of her daughter. When she came out of the chamber, Dr Raju Ahmed harassed her daughter sexually during her treatment.

When she informed the incident to her colleagues, teachers and students of various departments of RU including the department of Applied Chemistry, formed several human chains demanding punishment of the accused doctor.

As a result, the authorities of RU suspended Dr Raju on November 5 and the RU Administration formed a three-member Probe Committee to investigate into the incident.

RU sources informed, 22 persons had earlier complained to the Committee to Check the Sexual Harassment and Torture of RU at various times against Dr Raju. As a result, the last Syndicate Meeting of RU decided to sac Dr Raju permanently from the University Medical Centre.

Dr Abdul Alim, Professor and Researcher of the Department of Law of RU informed that it was necessary to further strengthen the Sexual Harassment Checking Cell, start a Victim Support Centre and take a public awareness programme for a safer campus for students.

The fight of a university teacher against the harassment of her child will remain a source of inspiration for all, he added. He also said all sufferers like her would fight against criminals to ensure justice.
