How strenuously the journalists perform their duties amid violence, clash, curfew and natural disaster is known to all. Many journalists were killed and injured seriously when they were in the field to cover the events braving hostile situation.
We the journalists believe that journalism cannot be merely a profession. We believe journalism is still a motto to many journalists. Therefore, journalists always play key role in building a nation amid all odds.
We believe freedom of media and freedom of expression are definitely necessary to consolidate the democracy. Freedom of press and the expansion of media in Bangladesh are examples for other developing countries.
Media should play a responsible role along with enjoying freedom in publishing or broadcasting stories on the latest mayhem unleashed by BNP-Jamaat-Shibir. Sometimes the media misleads people by presenting news cutting out the necessary parts and omitting what was said before and after the speech.
We media people should be more responsible and maintain objectivity in such reporting to play a positive role by providing authentic news. Journalists play a critical role everywhere strengthening democratic institutions by reporting on facts, transparency and accountability.

This role is more important now than ever. We believe in free media and media freedom as well. There are few countries where mass media enjoy such unfettered freedom as it does in Bangladesh. If there is the responsibility with freedom, mass media can operate properly. But if the freedom is exercised avoiding responsibility, then in many cases the society as well as the state is harmed.
The mass media is the fourth pillar of the state and democracy and the mass media are complement to each other. Without freedom and transparency of media, democracy can never be operative and democratic social system cannot survive.
While exchanging views with editors, senior journalists and head of news of various media outlets, organised by Editors’ Guild at her office (PMO) in the city, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that vested quarter is highly interested to destroy country’s independence and the continuation of democracy that is going on for long 15 years. She questioned about the understanding level of the people who supported the mayhem aiming to cripple the country’s advancement and prosperity.
Referring to the countrywide recent havoc and atrocities Sheikh Hasina said that she had an apprehension there might be a strike like this by the BNP-Jamaat clique to pull down the country's prosperity.
The journalists in the meeting assured Sheikh Hasina of doing whatever is required to accomplish her activities. They can do whatever needed for her as they have trust and confidence on her.
On the other hand, foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka described the vandalism committed by miscreants backed by BNP-Jamaat clique as “shameful” and said they are beside Bangladesh. They (Diplomats) became horrified by the vandalism and destruction by seeing with their own eyes. We the journalists must be cautious in publishing and broadcasting any news. We believe the journalists open the third eye of the society by exposing the suppressed issues. Journalism is a great profession. Therefore, we must not blend journalism with crime and propaganda.
The journalist community should not publish any such distorted news will harm the country’s advancement and image. The journalists must publish the authentic stories on BNP-Jamaat-Shibir mayhem.
