Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) arrested two Rohingya nationals along with eight gold bars in Sitakunda of Chattogram. The arrested are Asmat Ullah (24) and Chahura Khatun (68). Both are Rohingya citizens, a mother-son relationship.
RAB-7 Commander Lt. Col. MA Yusuf said these things in a press conference after the Rohingya mother and son were arrested with gold bars from Jangal Chalimpur area of Sitakunda on Saturday.
Chandgaon CPC-3 camp, Lieutenant Colonel MA Yusuf said that the Rohingyas are bringing gold bars illegally with the money from the sale of yaba. Rohingyas have been trafficked in different ways to the camps. The government is losing a huge amount of revenue.
RAB-7 received this information during an anti-narcotics operation in Cox's Bazar-Myanmar border area. Based on information, two Rohingyas, mother and son, were arrested from a rented house in Jangal Chalimpur of Sitakunda on Friday night. Meanwhile, 8 gold bars, 5 gold chains, 1 pair of gold bangles, 3 pairs of gold earrings, 3 gold rings, 4 gold lockets were recovered from a red shopping bag inside a plastic bowl. The estimated value of the seized 8 gold bars is Tk 1 crore and the rest of the recovered gold ornaments are estimated to be worth around Tk 50 lakh.
He said that the detainees are Rohingya citizens. They had been living in jungle Salimpur since they entered Bangladesh in 2012. Detained Asmat Ullah lived in Eidgah area of Cox's Bazar district till June 2014. Later in 2014, after obtaining a Bangladeshi passport through an agency, he went to Saudi Arabia with a visa through an uncle from the area named Abdus Salam. He was staying in Saudi Arabia illegally until August 2014, but the visa expired later. Later the police of that country arrested him and sent him to Bangladesh. After getting married in December 2020, moved to Salimpur with his wife and mother from Eidgah. He was living there for some time.
