The issues of trial of top Myanmar military officials involved in 2017 Rohingya genocide and the sustainable Rohingya repatriation were highlighted by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The issues were raised during the two sideline meetings respectively with Iranian president and Malaysian prime minister in the 18th NAM Summit. Different heads of states also demanded trial of top Myanmar military and civil leaders responsible for the genocide of Rohingyas.

We welcome the attention that these issues are getting as it is necessary for successful repatriation of the Rohingya refugees. Bangladesh is now hosting over 1.2 million Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar district of the country and much of Bangladesh's forest is getting destroyed creating environmental disasters due to the presence of the huge Rohingya population.

The government is taking strategic actions to ensure repatriation of Rohingyas. The government of Bangladesh, along with several other nations, has been pressuring Myanmar to take back the Rohingya refugees in a safe and dignified manner.

The huge number of Rohingya refugees in the country has put an enormous strain on our economy and the environment. Moreover, the Rohingya also pose a security threat as many have been found to be involved in gang warfare, drug smuggling and other illegal activates.

Needless to say, the inaction of other countries has been a huge drawback for Bangladesh during the Rohingya crisis. It is therefore high time that the repatriation process of the refugees is started in an orderly manner. Bangladesh will need the full support of other countries to be able to do so promptly.

The international community must come together to put due pressure on Myanmar to reintegrate the Rohingyas return to their homeland. The international community must remain vigilant when it comes to human rights violations against the Rohingya. They must ensure that Myanmar cannot carry out any more atrocities and violent ethnic cleansing against the Rohingyas.
