The Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) arrested a Rohingya man with 150,000 yaba tablets while attempting to smuggle the drugs across the Ukhiya border in Balukhali, Cox’s Bazar.
According to a press release sent to the media on Friday, the information was provided by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Jasim Uddin, commanding officer of BGB’s Ukhiya 64 Battalion.
The arrested individual, Md. Sadek Hossain (20), is the son of Mohammad Alam and a resident of Hakim Para in Rohingya Camp 14 under Palongkhali Union, Ukhiya Upazila.
Lt. Col. Jasim Uddin said that around midnight on Thursday, BGB personnel spotted three suspicious individuals approaching from the Myanmar side through the coconut grove area of the Balukhali border. When the personnel instructed them to stop, one of them dropped a small bag and attempted to flee back into Myanmar. BGB members managed to apprehend one person while the others escaped.
“Upon searching the site, the abandoned bag was recovered. When opened, it contained 150,000 yaba tablets with an estimated market value of approximately 45 million BDT,” he added.
The officer also stated that the arrested person confessed to transporting the shipment from Myanmar under a contract worth 9,000 BDT with a known drug trafficker, Abdur Rahim, from Rahmat’er Bil area of Palongkhali Union. The recovered consignment belonged to Abdur Rahim, who is already a fugitive in a previously filed BGB narcotics smuggling case.
A case has been filed against the arrested individual under the relevant laws at Ukhiya Police Station, confirmed Lt. Col. Mohammad Jasim Uddin.
