An alleged Rohingya drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as M Saker, 22, son of Khairul Amin of Block-H at Balukhali Rohinya camp at Ukhia upazila in Cox's Bazar.

Lt Col Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-2, said that on information that a group of smugglers were entering Bangladesh from Myanmar with a big consignment of drugs, a BGB team took position at Nayapara salt field area around 4:30am.

After a while, some people were seen entering the area with sacks after crossing the Naf River. When BGB stopped them, the criminals opened fire, triggering a skirmish, he said.

Saker sustained bullet injuries during the ‘gunfight’. Later, he was taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the on duty doctors declared him dead, said the BGB official.

He claimed that two BGB members were injured during the gunfight. The BGB team also recovered 240,000 yaba tablets, one locally made gun, two rounds of cartridges and a machete from the spot.
