A robbery was commited at a house of a local resident inside a registered Rohingya camp in Mochni village under Teknaf upazila on Wednesday.
Two people were abducted at that time. The robbers demanded a ransom of Tk 5 lakh after the abduction.
A clash between the locals and the Rohingyas occurred following the incident. Some Rohingya miscreants fired gun at that time. Later, locals blocked a road in protest of the incident.
Hnila Union Parishad (UP) Member, Mohammad Ali, said the robbery was commited at Dudu Mia’s house inside a registered Rohingya camp in Mochni Noapara area under Hnila union parishad in Teknaf upazila on early Wednesday. The robbers severely beat Dudu Mia and the women of his families. They also looted cash and gold ornaments at that time and abducted his two sons.
The abductees were identified as Md Tarek, 22 and Md Rasel, 20, son of Dudu Mia.
UP Member Mohammad Ali said when the news of the robbery spread through the area, the locals started to through bricks at the Rohingya camp. As a result, a clash occurred between the locals and the Rohingyas. At one point, some Rohingya miscreants fired gun at the locals. The APBn police at the Rohingya camp fired few rounds of blank bullets and dispersed the crowd. Three people of Mochini village were injured at that time. Later, the robbers let go of the two abductees after they received the demanded ransom of Tk 5 lakh at around 8:00 am on Wednesday. They also physically tortured the two abductees. Later, they received treatment at a NGO hospital.
Meanwhile, the locals blocked the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf road to protest against the incident and as Rohingya miscreants fired gun at them. Hundreds of people burned tires and blocked the road. The blockade continued for almost hours starting from 9:30am. Many passengers faced sufferings due to the blockade. Local UP Member Mohammad Ali went there after four hours and calmed the people down. They withdrew the blockade after that.
UP Member Mohammad Ali said some armed Rohingya miscreants abducted two locals and demanded ransom. They also physically tortured the abductees. The locals blocked the road in protest. They demanded the arrest of the armed Rohingyas and the safety of the area.
In-Charge of Mochni camp, Hannan Sarker, said the situation in the camp is normal at present. APBn police is patrolling the area to provide safety in the area.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Adnan Chowdhury, said he learned about the abduction and the road blockade. He has informed the law enforcement force. Necessary measures are being taken in connection with the incident.
