In a special operation, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested a close associate of the infamous Sundarbans-based robber gang, Karim Sharif Bahini, along with arms and ammunition.
On Monday Lieutenant Commander Harun-ur-Rashid, Media Officer of the Coast Guard, confirmed that acting on a tip-off, the Coast Guard's Mongla Base launched a special operation at Arabhawani canal in the Shibsa River area of the Sundarbans around 6 a.m.
During the operation, one single-barrel gun and three rounds of live ammunition were recovered, and Md. Sohel Hossain Mithu (37)—a key accomplice of the notorious robber Karim Sharif—was arrested. The detainee is a resident of Dacope upazila in Khulna district.
Initial interrogation revealed that the accused had long been involved with the robber gang, assisting them in criminal activities and supplying them with arms, ammunition, and logistics.
According to the Coast Guard, continued crackdown operations like this are gradually turning the Sundarbans into a pirate- and robber-free zone. As a result, local fishermen and coastal communities now feel safer and are able to pursue their livelihoods without fear.
The Coast Guard further stated that they are maintaining round-the-clock patrols and special operations in coastal and riverine areas to uphold law and order. These efforts have significantly improved the security situation across these vulnerable regions.
Operations to completely free the Sundarbans from bandits will continue in the future.
