According to a study, a total of 7,713 people were killed and 12,615 injured in 6,829 road crashes in the immediate past year. At least 1237 students died and many others sustained severe injuries in separate road accidents in the country last year.  The study also says the last year’s figures were the highest since 2019 as the number of road crashes and deaths in 2021 were 6,284 and 5,371.

Students took to the streets for several times to protest against the death of their fellow students across the country in the last few years. Apart from the students, thousands of people and socio-cultural organisations also took to the streets to protest death of students in road crashes.

In the wake of students’ death, the government had come up with a number of commitments to reduce the number of road accidents and ensure road safety.

There is no alternative to

The government had also given a set of directives asking authorities concerned to take up different measures to ensure road safety in the capital. But the number of death from fatal road crashes in our country continued rising.

The government must be committed to ensuring people’s safety and security on  roads and highways. All concerned including voluntary organisations, private establishments, teachers and guardians should extend necessary cooperation to the government to ensure road safety. Reckless driving is one of the major reasons of road accident. Hence, drivers must abide by speed limit to stop loss of life and property.

Massive public awareness, regular training for drivers and necessary infrastructure are the prerequisites for preventing road accidents. There is no alternative to raising awareness among the students and general people to check road mishap.
