While addressing virtually from Moscow the nuclear fuel-uranium handover ceremony for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) Russian President Vladimir Putin termed the RNPP a symbol of strong bilateral ties between Dhaka and Moscow.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who joined the ceremony virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban in capital Dhaka, said Bangladesh will be turned into a smart country in future, and the nuclear power plant is another step towards building that Smart Bangladesh.

The Rooppur project is being implemented by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission with the technical and financial support of Russia. Both countries have interests in this project and it will have huge contribution to Bangladesh’s energy and economic security. We are praising the Russian President for his country’s support to make Bangladsh a member of the nuclear power producing club. With the establishment of the Rooppur nuclear power plant, Bangladesh has become the 33rd nuclear power-producing country in the world. Bangladesh is a tested friend and development partner of Russia.

Russia and Bangladesh have established their ties in the field of mutual cooperation more than 52 years back.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Soviet Union had extended support to East Bengal on its struggle for independence and rebuilding the newly independent country.

Bangladesh is a

partner of Russia

And Russia is one of the first countries which recognised Bangladesh’s independence. Soon after independence Russia extended cooperation to build big industries and power plants in Bangladesh which are still contributing to its economy.

It is good to note that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s visit to Moscow was a historical milestone to build up ties between the two countries.

We express our optimism over RNPP project for minimising the shortage of electricity in the country in coming days.

The first unit of the nuclear power plant will supply 1,200 MW power soon while the same amount of electricity will be available from the second unit in 2024.

As per the electoral commitment, the government is working hard to implement the mega projects as early as possible.

All these projects have been included on the fast-track list.

As the government is expanding rural electrification and reaching power to every house by adopting multifaceted plans, the rate of electricity users enhanced to 97.5 per cent from only 47 per cent and the number of clients increased to 3.74 crore from 1 crore. Besides, the work of establishing 100 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in important places of the country is progressing rapidly. Apart from country’s people, the government will also have to provide all facilities especially electricity to the investors in Bangladesh.

Therefore, we believe no obstacle can halt the progress of Bangladesh, while it will be transformed into Sonar Bangla, dreamt by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, under the leadership of his worthy daughter Sheikh Hasina.
