Around 44 valiant Freedom Fighters (FFs) of police and family members of the deceased police staff were accorded reception as recognition to the laudable and heroic role towards the Great War of Liberation of the country.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) authority organised the reception ceremony at the police lines conference hall today to mark the Victory Day 2021 together with the golden jubilee celebration of the country's independence.
RMP Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique addressed the ceremony as the chief guest while Additional Commissioners Suzayet Islam and Mazid Ali spoke as special guests.
They distributed crests and gifts among the freedom fighter police officers, members and other civilians on the occasion.
Deputy Commissioners Rashidul Hassan and Sazid Hossain, among others, were present at the ceremony.
The meeting was told that the then DIG Mamun Mahmud and the then SP Shah Abdul Mazid were killed by Pakistani military on the initial stage of the war in Rajshahi.
In his remarks, Abu Kalam Siddique said the country's people would never forget the sacrifice of police during the War of Liberation.
He said police personnel had built armed resistance against the first attack of the Pakistani military at the starting stage of the war. On March 26 in 1971, hundreds of policemen became martyred in Dhaka, he added.
He told the meeting that Shah Abdul Mazid joined as Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rajshahi on August 15, 1970.
On March 29, Pakistani military attempted to take control over the Rajshahi police lines. Then police, led by the SP, had resisted them. More than 50 policemen were martyred in the battle. Many Pakistani military men were also killed and injured.
On March 31, the Pakistani military forcibly took away SP Mazid from the banglow of Deputy Commissioner and since then he has remained missing.
Kalam Siddique mentioned that the police administration is very much positive towards the best sons of the soil alongside improving their living and livelihood conditions.
He said all of us should have to take the responsibility of protecting the freedom fighters, great sons of the soil. All of us should stand beside them.
The significance and spirit of the War of Liberation should be highlighted before the new generation.
