Garment workers staged demonstrations at different places in the capital, including Mirpur, demanding an increase in the holiday announced on the occasion of Eid, early payment of salaries and bonuses as well as resumption of public transport to go home.

Yesterday they gathered and started chanting slogans at different places in Mirpur-14, Kafrul, Vashantek and Mirpur-10 demanding 7 to 10 days of Eid holiday. At this time the traffic on the road came to a standstill, causing severe traffic congestion.

The agitated workers said that three days of Eid holiday have been announced. It is not possible to go, relax and come back from the village home within this time. Therefore, holiday should be extended to seven days. The workers also demanded that public transport should be plying on road so that it can facilitate them to go home.

They also said that even though there are only 5 days left for Eid, they have not been given salary-bonus yet. It is not possible to go for Eid shopping if the salary-bonus is given one or two days before the closure.

Workers of about 30 garment factories in Mirpur took part in the movement. They said the movement would continue until the demand was met.
