Country's apparel exporters on Monday urged upon the buyers to be sympathetic to the factories and not to create any
additional pressure on affected factories due to unwilling
delays, caused by the ongoing situation.
Leaders of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) made the call during a meeting with the Buyers Forum in the capital.
Representatives of the world’s leading apparel buyers in Bangladesh were present in the meeting.
BGMEA President SM Mannan Kochi said they highlighted the undesirable situation that started on July 18 and the steps taken by the government to control it.
"We have shared BGMEA’s steps with the buyers to keep the normal operations of the industry going and the supply chain uninterrupted. We have been actively working with the government since day-1 to bring stability to the garment industry", Kochi added.
He said "we called on Prime Minister and Home Minister and requested to start factories at the earliest through ensuring overall safety of industries including Dhaka and Chattogram".
Since the law and order situation has improved due to the sincere action taken by the government, we have been able to reopen the factories within a very short time.
He said they have been in regular discussions with the State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) regarding speedy launch of internet services, so that internet is launched soon, albeit on a limited scale.
He mentioned that the government quickly resumed internet services as they requested also considering the interest of the country’s export trade.
However, everyone including garment factories and buyers had to suffer due to this unprecedented situation.
"All the productions and export activities went shut during the 5-day long shutdown which ultimately caused financial loss for the factories and in the supply chain.
Situation like this is a big blow to our industry at a time when we are trying to survive.
