Riyad recovers from Covid, elected Khulna’s skipper

Bangladesh T20 skipper and all-rounder Mahmuduallah Riyad recovers from novel coronavirus. His result came negative in the Covid-19 test on Monday.

Mahmudullah himself confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon, “By the grace of Almighty Allah, I have been tested corona negative yesterday. Now will try to be back on the field as soon as possible In Sha Allah. Thanks for all of your prayers, love and support.”

The 34-year-old had tested positive on November 6 and in the subsequent test too as he was preparing to take part in the Pakistan Super League playoffs for Multan Sultans. 

Meanwhile, Mahmudullah was elected as the skipper of Gemcon Khulna ahead of the upcoming Bangabandhu T20 Cup. Gemcon Khulna confirmed the matter in a statement shortly after the news of his recovery from the coronavirus on Tuesday.

“We are delighted to be participating in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup with Gemcon Khulna. We are really excited to have both Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan in our team this year,” Kazi Inam Ahmed, Managing Director of Gemcon Sports said. “Mahmudullah Riyad, the Bangladesh national T20 captain will be leading the Gemcon Khulna team as captain. He has previously led the Khulna Titans for three seasons with many successes in Bangladesh Premier League T20. We look forward to playing positive cricket with the goal to be champions in this prestigious tournament, he added.

Mahmudullah is also quite excited to get the leadership. "We are very balanced as a team," he said, vowing to do something great with his team. In terms of bowling, Shafiul Islam, Al-Amin Hossain, Hasan Mahmud have the ability to do great things. Rishad Hossain along with Shakib Al Hasan will bring variety in spin arsenal. I think Gemcon Khulna as a team are a great team and I believe we can achieve big things in this tourney.”

Mahmudullah also praised his batting unit. “In batting department we have experienced campaigners in shape of Anamul Haque, Imrul Kayes, Shakib, Jahurul Islam and myself. We have been playing for a while now so that the experience will give that depth to the lineup. Ariful Haque and Shuvagata Hom have played a lot of cricket as well. 

Overall I am happy with the team we have and hope we will be able to generate a good result. I am eagerly waiting to join team Gemcon Khulna and play some good cricket. I would like to           thank Bangladesh Cricket Board for organising such an important tournament for us considering the Covid-19 situation. 

This tournament will surely benefit our cricketers,” Gemcon Khulna skipper added.
