A fresh wet spell is likely to set over Bangladesh in coming days, the Met Office predicted, amidst water levels in major rivers all over the country dropping.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said, the Jamuna flowed above its danger marks in four districts – Gaibandha, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail – but was rapidly falling.
The flood situation is likely to improve by today, the FFWC said.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department in a 24-hour bulletin issued at 6:00pm said Dhaka was among the six divisions that were likely to witness rain in many places over the next two days.
Many places cover the range of 50 to 70 per cent of an area in the BMD definition.
‘Rain might increase after two days, particularly in the coastal region,’ said meteorologist Shaheenul Islam.
In the 24 hours until 6:00pm, the BMD said, Dhaka received the country’s highest rainfall of 35mm.
The BMD said a low was likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal.
On Monday, the country’s highest temperature of 37.2C was recorded in Sylhet.
A heat wave swept the Sylhet division along with the district of Feni with chances of it continuing, said the BMD. In the 24 hours until 8:30am on Monday, India Meteorological Department said, West Bengal received 80 per cent excess rain compared with what is the normal average.
The retreat of river meant it was the time for people displaced by the flood in northern and central Bangladesh to return home. The return home may not be sustained as a flood is forecasted in this month.
After 35 per cent excessive rain in August, rivers are flowing very high and even smaller spell of rain upstream could trigger floods in Bangladesh.
The IMD forecast said Bangladesh’s upstream might not see any significant amount of rain until September 10.
