The water level Brahmaputra, Dharla and Teesta has increased due to torrential rain and upstream onrush of water. The river erosion takes a serious turn as the people living in the river banks have lost everything, including their houses.
Akkel Mamud Community Clinic, Kuder Kuti Kashem Bazar Jame Moshjid, 60 houses and 120 acres of cropland under Begumganj union of Ulipur Upazila in Kurigram went under water as the water of Dharla River increased.
Besides, Khuder Kuti Abdul Hamid High School and flood shelter center are at risk of river erosion. The locals have been trying to save their locality from erosion by putting sacks and tree branches on the bank of the river.
Akter Hossain, Moktar Hossain, Mohubor Rahman and Ibrahim Ali, residents of river eroded Begumganj union, said our houses and lands were lost in the river. The people of the area will lose everything if measures are not taken immediately to prevent the river erosion.
Begumganj Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Bablu Mia said the river erosion due to the torrential rain for a few days swallowed up a community clinic and 60 houses, including my house. School, flood shelter center and other establishments will be gone under water if effective measures are not taken immediately.
Ulipur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Mohammad Harun Or Rashid said Akkel Mamud Community Clinic went under the water of the river. However, the medical equipment and necessary papers were rescued. The matter was informed to the higher authorities.
Executive Engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board Rakibul Hasan said river erosion was seen at Begumganj as the water of Dharla River increased. People concerned were sent there. A total of 1,500 geo-bags are being placed on the riverbanks to prevent the erosion.
