Being famous for the paddy source of northern region, Naogaon district currently is facing a huge price hike in the market. Price of the imported rice is currently disturbing the price balance in the district, people complained.

Indian LC Katari rice is currently being sold at Tk 62 per kg when couple of days earlier it was sold at Tk 56 per kg. Zirashail price has gone upto tk 2 per kilo. Indian Katari rice price has gone up to 170 tk for per 25 kilo rice sack.

Most of the local customers who are barely keeping up with the price till now suffocate by the hike. Meanwhile, vendors and businessmen are accusing retailers for increasing the rate. Vendors in the area urge authorities to investigate and monitor the price hike.

Buyers in the markets are dumbfounded when they are facing the new prices. Many buyers said that people with marginal income are suffering due to price hike. As rice being the major part of their diet, this price hike has led them to almost starving.

Naogaon Municipality rice businessmen committee spokesperson Uttam Sarker said that big retailers are stocking rice to increase the price. Without an active market monitoring system, this phenomenon will get worse. Other businessmen and rice mill owners in the area also urge authorities to take immediate actions ahead of Eid.
