Bangladesh cricket team head coach Steve Rhodes yesterday emphasized on the importance of good top order foundation. Speaking of top order, Bangladesh have always lacked a solid consistent partner alongside southpaw left handed opener Tamim Iqbal.
Tigers’ search for a stable partner in the opening slot alongside Tamim Iqbal is something team management has struggled to identify throughout the years. Tamim rarely had a consistent partner in both ODI’s and Tests. With World Cup on the doorstep, inform left-handed Soumya Sarkar and right-handed Liton Das remain as the likely partner alongside stalwart like Tamim.
Rhodes, however said he would prefer left-hand, right-hand combination to the reporters during a press conference in Mirpur yesterday.
“You’ve seen recently we have gone left-hand and right-hand combination for the opening slot with Liton and Tamim. I personally like left-hand and right-hand combination,"
The head coach also mentioned that he tipped Soumya before he went on to smash a superlative double-ton that helped Abahani Limited to clinch the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) title last Tuesday.
“I loved what Soumya has done in the last two games, getting a hundred and then scoring a double-century. It was interesting that it was not down to me. However, once I did tell him that ‘you are not going to get lots of chances to score a two-hundred. If you get to hundred then do not throw it away’. But I think that was not down to me but I did mentioned it to him. So he is in wonderful form,”
Rhodes however did not want to give any assurance about who is going to open with Tamim in the World Cup and said he had faith on both Liton and Soumya.
“I don’t want to reveal who the opening combination will be in the World Cup. I think that’s not the right thing to do at the moment. But all I can say I have faith in both of them.”
