Silk is undoubtedly the most gorgeous fibre that exists since many millennia. Rajshahi is known as the silk city of Bangladesh. The silk industry in our country is one of the oldest and popular in the world for its fine fabric, with farmers in the north-western border district of Rajshahi producing some of the most sought-after silk yarns.

In recent times, the silk industry is limping due to lack of proper and time befitting measures. Therefore, to rejuvenate this sector, the government has taken up a project worth Tk 25.75 crore for the development of silk industry in Rangamati and Rangpur districts. Bangladesh Silk Development Board (BSDB) should also play their part along with the government to revive our silk industry.

There is huge potential export market for

Bangladeshi silk and we just need to do it

right to fully exploit  the market

This sector has long been ignored. Now the government is taking initiative for enhancement of this sector. Reviving the silk industry will not only create new jobs but will also help  boost our already booming economy. There is a huge potential export market for Bangladeshi silk and we just need to do it right to fully exploit the market.

Government should offer interest free loans to the farmers and extensive research should be conducted on this field which will further develop the sector and play a significant role in the country’s economy. However, proper monitoring of the government’s initiative is needed to make it a success as billions of taka have been misappropriated in the past in the name of development of the silk sector.

It is high time to take realistic steps to help return silk’s past glory. Proper management should be made among the concerned groups for its further development. Government along with other concerned organizations should take effective steps for the greater interest of the silk industry of our country.
