We are very concerned about the deterioration of law and order situation across the country following the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. We also strongly condemn the attacks on the houses, places of worship, temples and businesses belonging to the minority community people taking place in different parts of the country.
Besides, several government structures, establishments and offices, and the houses of Awami League leaders and activists were attacked, vandalised and torched in the capital city of Dhaka, other metropolitan cities, district towns, upazila headquarters and even remote villages across the country. Law and order broke completely in the country on Tuesday as policemen remained absent from their duty at their police stations.
According to media reports, since Monday afternoon, there has been hardly any presence of policemen in urban areas and by Tuesday the breakdown of the police system was evident throughout the country.
Many top police officials have gone into hiding to protect their lives. Consequently, police stations have remained empty and unguarded since Tuesday morning. A sense of serious insecurity grips the people in the capital and elsewhere in the country.
Authorities must play a
responsible role in
protecting the lives
and properties of people
We, therefore, are calling for taking immediate measures to this end. The authorities concerned have deployed Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) members at the police stations across the country but this cannot be a fix to this alarming situation as it is only the policemen who can effectively maintain law and order. Police have the capacity to face any challenges during any crisis.
The authorities must play a responsible role in protecting the lives and properties of people, especially the leaders of different political parties and minority communities. Therefore, the authorities should build mutual trust between the people and police as early as possible in the greater interest of the country and its people.
It is urgently needed to bring back confidence in the policemen so that they will remain safe and will be encouraged to perform their duty to protect the lives of the people and properties.
We hope the police will resume their duties immediately as they are the friends of people. We cannot imagine a society without police.
We urge everyone to act in a responsible manner to get rid of the current unruly situation prevailing in the country. We also urge all to play their role in establishing an equitable nation which will be governed by overcoming all the challenges and thwarting any conspiracy by the vested interest groups.
