A detailed discussion on research methodology and barriers as well as way-outs of the researchers of our country was highlighted in the International Symposium on Research methodology and Econometrics, organized by the Entrepreneurial Economists club of Dhaka School of Economics (DScE) on Friday.

Mentioning research methodology as the basis for doing research work, the speakers at the event said that econometrics helps to do accurate resultant factors. Criticizing the Bangladesh Bank’s (BB) decision, the speakers said that, a lot of researchers in our country cannot pay more than USD 300 to publish article in SCOPUS indexed journals.

Therefore, they asserted that BB should prohibit this rule so that academicians can send the needed amount for the genuine SCOPUS indexed journal which must not be predatory.

Emphasizing on Econometrics, they said it is probably the most difficult subject. But for decision making, it needs to be used from business to administration. The speakers further laid emphasis on changing the old technique of recruiting officials through Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) and including more English medium students. They said that in order to do so, its modus operandi should be changed.  Moreover, they suggested following an exam system that includes traditional question patterns like other neighboring countries, for which the Public Service Commission (PSC) should conduct research and develop their current recruiting strategies. The programme was chaired by Professor Dr Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Coordinator of ‘Entrepreneurship programme’. He argued that statistical data analysis must be done ethically so that development progress by the present government can be understood. The basics of research methods were discussed by Prof Dr Kripa Shanker Gupta of India, while use of Data Science for Econometric modeling and quantitative analysis for research was discussed by Dr Anusree Paul.

Meanwhile, qualitative analysis and focus group discussion were highlighted by Professor Dr Abdullah Abusayed Khan. Moreover, Prof Dr Anisul M Islam, put emphasis on research publications. He said academics should choose good quality journals which must be thought provoking.
