Renewable energy is the only solution to climate change and the power crisis in the country. Speakers at a symbolic protest rally made the statement on Tuesday (June 27, 2023).
Waterkeepers Bangladesh, a platform working to protect the water and water bodies of Bangladesh; and The Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD), a regional alliance of peoples’ movements and NGOs; jointly arranged the symbolic protest rally in front of Meghnaghat Power Plant, a under construction power plant at Meghnaghat on the banks of Meghna River in Narayanganj. The programme was arranged demanding stopping financing in fossil fuels.
Speaking at the protest rally, Sharif Jamil, coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh; said that the policymakers of Bangladesh should think about renewable energy instead of fossil fuels and increase investment in it in order to keep the development activities of the country dynamic and sustainable in the future.
Liddy Nakpil, coordinator of APMDD and convener of the Asian Energy Network; said that the fossil fuel projects like the Meghnaghat Power Plant are fraught with dirty and deadly investments that severely damage health, livelihoods and local ecosystems. Such projects release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
